CURR 501 4.2: Final Project Ideas

I'm not 100% sure yet on what I want to do in regards to the "Change" portion of the project yet. I guess I'll just brain dump whatever's in my head now on here in hopes that I end up finding something good to write about!

Well as most of you know by now I am an After School Site Coordinator so I'm not in the traditional "teacher" role. However, I do feel as though my job still supports youth in learning...just in a non traditional school curriculum sort of way!

Throughout my time being with youth after school I've truly gained a appreciation for student creativity and letting the after school space be a space where students can come to experiment and "test the waters" and this space has definitely been a space where I've seen the most learning happening!

So in terms of a "change" I'd like to see in my after school programs would be giving the youth more autonomy in the decision making for after school program options. Usually we just give students a flyer that has all the program options on there but I think it'd be great to let youth have a say in what programs even make it to the flyer! As I've learned in this class, whenever someone's learning about a topic that interests them, they're going to be way more engaged and excited to learn so why not match the student's interests to their program options?  Who knows, the students might end up becoming a founder of new unheard of program!

How technology could tie into this would be the use of different websites and even apps to see what catches interests to youth and also help them dig more into research about the things that interests them!

MY TO DO LIST ON THIS PROJECT:

1. Try to develop this "idea" more and relating it back to media/technology.

2. Once I have my idea thought out try to write about it as much as I can.

3.  Learn more about Pecha Kucha and then tie it all into my paper!

Comments

  1. This reminds me of my time running an After School program at City Year. Of course we wanted to choose clubs because we wanted to show them things we thought were interesting. But when we actually just gave the kids a list of things we could do and let them choose their preferences, they were so much more engaged. It would be really cool to see the data on what activities and programs interest them most.
